OUR STORY
Located in the heart of Downtown Kuala Lumpur, REXKL is a community & cultural hub that occupies the historical site of one of the country's first theatres before its founding in 1947. After the first fire in 1972, Rex Cinema was rebuilt as a state-of-the-art single-screen theatre with over a thousand seating capacity. In its heyday, the Shaw Brothers, and later Golden Screen Cinemas, operated the theatre before another fire in 2002 that ended its glory days as a cinema. Seventeen years later, a group of creative entrepreneurs led by Shin Tseng and Shin Chang decided to re-activate this 60,000 sq. ft. building as part of the mission to rejuvenate the forgotten part of KL by injecting new businesses, cultural agenda and creative programs into this otherwise dilapidated hidden gem.

Privileging the reclaimed and repurposed, we aim to give the old building a new lease of life as a community hub for events, theatre, performances, screenings, facilities, exhibitions and workshops.

REXKL features the city’s emerging artisans, restaurateurs and retailers, including Stellar Coffee, Book-Xcess, & Outsider Bikes. It is a lively, thriving community, making it a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike. The project also has ample event space featuring the original brick and exposed structure.
